To start off I would like to tell you why I'm writing this autobiography is because I want you to know how some immigrants lived in the U.S. I, Clara Whitman, was born on July 7, 1841 in Frankfurt, Germany. I have three older brothers and 2 older sisters and my father doesn't have the money to py for all of us. Our house only has two rooms. My parents have been talking about moving to the U.S. but we have never gotten to. -
Mom and Dad Died
Now I am 16 and my parents have died of desease. I am now living with my siblings in the same house. I haven't seen a smile from any of them since mom and dad died. I now have to work in a factory. The working conditions are horrible, but it pays for my food so I can't quiet. I'm working 17 hours a day for only 50 cents an hour. -
Coming to America
I have finaly gotten a ticket to come on a ship to America. I am so excited. I have to leave all my family and friends which is very hard, but they said they would come over soon. I'm hoping To find a much better job in pay and the conditions of the work place. I'm trying not to get my hopes up on getting a speciefac job in the Political party because I'm almost positive I wont get it, but I can dream can't I. -
Ellis Island
Finaly I have arrived in America. Ellis Island is way more crowded than I thought.. I have seen many people leave because they have some desease. I praying I don't have to leave. The Statue of Liberty is so beautiful, it gives me faith. I just saw someone I now from my home town. They were sent away because of some desease, but I didn't get to talk to her. Found a Job
I found a job as a nanny for the Ronalds in Trento, New Jersey. They are very rich. I work 24/7 so I get to live in a mansion. They little girl Bella is so cute. I'm so ancious to work with her. Her mother on the other hand is very mean to Bella and her father is never home. I take Bella out to the park every day to play because she loves it there. We p;ay hide and go seak almost every day. Bella tries so hard to get her mothers attention, but never can. -
Goodbye Family
I got a letter today saying that some of my family and friends are coming to the U.S, I can't wait to see them again. I haven't talked to them in years. The minute they get here I will be waiting for them at the gate. I Just got a second letter with this one that says that their boat sank and everyone died. My heart was crushed when I saw that. Everyone I once knew and loved are gone. www.ellisisland.org -
Beat up
Today I was walking to the store to buy some food for Bella. I was on my way home and some people surrounded me. They kept saying I don't belong here, this place is for Americans, and they said I need to go back to my home counrty. I told them no to everything then they beat me up and took all my money and food. When I got home Mrs. Ronald asked me what happened and I told her then she blamed everything on me.
