HST 306 Timeline

  • Jan 1, 1492

    Jewish and Muslims.

    Jews and Muslims were expelled unless they converted to Christianity. This is significant to me to put in my timeline because I see that the hatred for Jews span farther than most people thought. The Christians were forcing their religion onto other people who did not want to be that religion.
  • Jan 1, 1520

    Protestant Reformation

    When the Protestant and the Catholic despised each other and the Protestant Reformation began. This is important because the religions started to separate more from each other. The reason I chose to put this on my timeline is to show people when the huge separation started to happen.
  • Plymouth

    When the ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they originially were supposd to land in Virgina. It is significant because the first people to land here were people who were alienated because they were Puritans or separatist. They came that way because they were wanting to worship their own religion. Also this is new land to settlers, they never experienced new land or foreign people.
  • First Thanksgiving

    First Thanksgiving
    This will be most significant date, because it is the first thanksgiving the people had with the Natives. The reason this is significant because when we first moved to this country we had no issue with the Natives. We was trying to build this relationship with them. So we had a huge feast with them.
  • Church of England

    The Church of England was established, and with this being established taxes were being enforced now. This was significant because it brought in taxes to the country, they were starting to make their own money. The taxes were just to pay the ministers, and for churches to be built. It is important because this was when taxes was coming into the country.
  • Anne Hutchinson

    Anne Hutchinson
    Anne Hutchinson landed in Boston, she escaped the persecution of the Puritans in England. She is significant to history because she was showing how strong Puritan women were. She believed she had a direct line to god. She believed that she did not need to go to school to become a minster that she was able to do what she wanted.
  • King Philip War

    King Philip War
    King Philip’s war in New England destroys many towns that were converting Indians to Christianity. This was huge because the proportion of death to population was off the charts. The threat of this war almost pushed Americans out of the colonies. Having to survive off the English people items angered the Indians. This was significant because it almost pushed people out of the colonies, if this war was any worse than it is, we might not have been here today.
  • 2 hour prayer

    A Dutch traveler reported that a minister had prayed for over two hours long. The reason I chose this is because learning about going to church in the past most people were there all day long. Most of the services for the Puritans was about four hours long.
  • William Penn

    William Penn
    The settlement of Penn, by William Penn a Quaker. This settlement transformed the Quakers, it turned them into a powerful religious group. This is important because it shows how Penn’s state in the colonies was growing fast. People from all over the world did not like this because his was growing faster and better than their own church too.
  • Violence for restrictions.

    The French King Louis XIV was forcing restrictions on protestant worship in La Voulte. He chose to use soldiers to violently enforce these laws. It is significant because it is showing that every country had a religious issue, and it showed how people came to America.
  • Salem Witch trials

    Salem Witch trials
    Salem witch trials are held. This was significant at the time because anyone could be accused of being a witch, and most of the time they lost the case. There was a special court that was made just to take those cases. All the cases were annulled later on, and the lingering feeling of the trials still can be felt.
  • Amish come to Penn.

    Amish come to Penn.
    Amish started to settle in Pennsylvania. Till this day most of the Amish still live by their original traditions. Most of them traveled to this colony because they were avoiding persecution. There is 3 different types of Anabaptist related groups, the Amish, Mennonites, and Brethren, but their views are pretty much the same.
  • Mason lodging established

    The first Mason lodge in the colonies was formed. This is huge because the pyramid on our money is what they traced back to our ancestors in ancient Egypt. They were tracing their own history to figure out where people came. Most of the Declaration of Independence signers were Masons.
  • Sarah Osborn

    Sarah Osborn lead religious revivals in Newport, Rhode Island. This is significant because at that time there was very few women who held services. She was also not just preaching to the white people, she also held services for the African-Americans too.
  • Quebec Act

    British Parliament passes the Quebec Act, this means that Catholic is recognized now in French territory in Canada. It gave the French people freedom to practice whatever religion they wanted. Instead of being forced to only one religion, they were able to practice what they wanted to practice without being scrutinized for it.
  • Methodist Recalled

    Wesley recalled all the Methodist to come back. This is significant because during the revolution the Methodist was pretty much diminished except for Francis Ashbury. The Methodist were very conservative and they stuck by England’s side. So when the declaration was signed, they were recalled to come back.
  • Methodist Episcopal Chuch

    The first Methodist Episcopal Church was founded. Overtime it eventually became the largest Protestant denomination in the US. This was important because some did not consider themselves Anglicans but they were Methodist. This is how the church was formed and separated.
  • Hanna Adams

    Hanna Adams
    Hanna Adams published the book Dictionary of All Religions. This is important because many people thought that this was theoretical, or medicated from a tale of places that are unknown. Also she was the first women in America to make a living off of writing.
  • National Prayer Day

    President George Washington made this a national day of prayer. It was for people to thank god for what they have, John Adams kept this tradition going when he was president.
  • First Catholic Bishop

    John Carroll of Maryland becomes the first Catholic bishop in the United States. This was unique because there was no schools in the Colonies for someone to become a bishop. So he was sent overseas, when he came back to the colonies he helped teach native born to become bishops.
  • Second Great Awakening

    Start of the Second Great Awakening, this was important because it impacted the social reform. This was a Christian revival movement, which everyone thought they could be saved through revivals. Or also you could be saved if you attended the huge mass meetings or services that were held. They believed they were trying to remove all evil before Jesus Christ comes to earth for the second time.
  • First Census

    This date is important because the first ever US census was taking. When the census was taken it showed that 85% of the white population was British Protestant traditions. Less than 2% of the white population claimed to be Catholic. But over the next 70 years it changed drastically.
  • First Amendment

    Ratification of the first Amendment. This is a huge step in America because it says Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. This summed up means that anyone is allowed to practice any religion they want to.
  • Cane Ridge Revival

    Cane Ridge Revival
    The Cane Ridge Revival the most famous religious meeting in American History. It started with days of preaching, and people had deep emotions. It was said that people were not able to control their body, and it just did what it wanted. This is significant because it is the largest cap meeting in the US.
  • Phoebe Palmer

    A woman by the name of Phoebe Palmer was born. She was one of the few women preachers. She was famous on both sides of the Atlantic. She wrote month articles in the Guide to Holiness. She was also different than most woman preachers because she was tough minded and clear eyed.
  • Slave Trade ended

    This year is very important because this is when the slave trade ended. Now owning a slave did not stop, but it is one step to stopping slavery. Many people did not want this to happen, as you can tell the bondsmen jumped in numbers from 400,000 to 4 million.
  • Stanton

    A woman by the name of Stanton was born. She is important because she is one of the writers who wrote The Women’s Bible. Which this exposed the Bibles teachings of women. She also sought out teachings of what hell is.
  • Frederick Douglas

    Frederick Douglas
    Frederick Douglas was born into slavery. This is a very important man because there was biography on himself. He was spreading word against the slave owners, he believed that the slave owners are everything against the bible. For reasons such as destroying many families for profit, raping women who were pure, and also men who tortured and murdered but would go to church on Sunday all holy.
  • Isaac Heeker

    This date is important because a man by the name of Isaac Heeker was born. He was born into a German family who attended a Methodist church. He eventually converted himself to the Catholic Church because he believed in their values. 14 years later he founded one of the most famous catholic orders for men, the Paulist Fathers.
  • Mary Baker Eddy was born

    Mary Baker Eddy was born, she was a mysterious woman. She was born with depression, she didn’t have a successful marriage. She is important because she believed in another reality. That god cannot create an error so our reality was simply an idea in god’s mind. She also founded the Massachusetts Metaphysical College.
  • Elijah P. Lovejoy murder

    Elijah P. Lovejoy murder
    A minister by the name of Elijah P. Lovejoy was murdered. He was murdered because he wanted to help abolish slavery, this is important because he was using his paper to show what was happening to the slaves. His press was destroyed three different times. This was important bcause he was preaching about women slaves being raped by their owners. When they should not even been there in the first place. He was trying to help the movement of abolishing it.
  • Henry Beecher

    Henry Beecher was born in New York. He is an important man because he was preaching the word that God is in our hearts not our minds. He was almost famous like his sister was who wrote Tom’s Cabin. Many of the people loved him, they loved his sermons, and they also reigned him as a king in the church.
  • Charles Russel was Born

    The founder of Jehovah witness Charles Russell was born. This is important because another premillennialist group was made. He left school early so he could go help his parents out and study the bible on his own.
  • John Brown

    John Brown
    A northerner John Brown felt like God has spoken to him and he was supposed to help stop slavery. This is important because another person is trying to help stop this slavery system that is going on. He also murdered five proslavery activist, and after that he moved to what is now known as West Virginia. He tried to spark a nationwide slave revolt where he took over federal arsenal. He was eventually executed for his crimes.
  • Origin of Species by Mean of Natural Selection

    Origin of Species by Mean of Natural Selection
    This year was important because Darwin’s massive book Origin of Species by Mean of Natural Selection was published. Many people find this contradicting to the bible because of the evolution that is written in it. Instead of God creating everything and killing things off. Darwin changed science and religion with this book. This book is meaning that everything changed over time not by God changing things.
  • Anna B. Warner

    Anna B Warner wrote the famous hymn Jesus loves me. This is important because we still hear this today. During colonial times, most colonial’s heartfelt thing hymn compared to today. Jesus love me! This I know, for the bible tells me so. Little ones ti him beong, they are weak, but he is strong.... yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
  • Irish Riots

    This is important because there was riots during this time with the Irish workers. They were scared during these riots that freed blacks would take their jobs. This is important to know that racism was beginning to grow bigger and bigger because they were not trying to help the blacks. Also to learn that the church favored the Old World traditions.
  • Leonidas Polk

    Leonidas Polk
    This date is important because it shows how devoted some people were to having or owning slaves. Leonidas Polk was a bishop of Louisiana, he exchanged his bishop’s robes for a Confederate uniform. He was trying to convert a lot of the slaves. He fought against losing the slaves, until he passed away from a cannon ball in the Battle of Atlanta.
  • Pope Issued letter

    The Pope issued a letter about errors, also it is included church and state separation. Also he attacked slavery too. The church had failed to condemn slavery. This is important because a higher power of the religions is stating that the church and state should not be separate and that slaves should be free.
  • Confederate Loss

    This is important because this is the day Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union. This is the day the military war ended but it is also the day the religious war intense. A lot of the northern clergy believed that god was favoring them more because they did win the war.
  • John Wilkes Booth

    John Wilkes Booth
    This is a very important date in history, it is the day we lost Abraham Lincoln as our president and he lost his life. John Wilkes Booth had watched the execution of Brown before he possessed the strength to kill Lincoln. He also did not have the courage to join the Confederate army but he found the courage to assassinate the president.
  • Looters

    Looters
    Looters invaded the Mohegan burial mounds, sacred skeletons, and also removing items that were buried there. Most of these items were sold to people, and some of them found their way back to the musuems. This is huge, because certain artifacts were not found, so we will never know about certain aspects into these people’s lives.
  • American Sunday School Union formed

    The American Sunday School Union was formed. This is significant because they help supply libraries with spellers, abc cards, and also thousands of books. They were supplying many Sunday schools with general and religious structure.
  • Christ came to earth

    This year is important because Charles Russell believed that Christ returned to earth in Spirit this year. Because of this belief, right after it they launched a war against the Satan believers and that Jehovah’s victory over Satan would follow with greatness.
  • Zion Watch Tower Society

    This year is important because the Zion’s Watch Tower Society was founded. This is controversy to the Christians belief because they believed that hell did not exist. They also believed that God was better known as the Old Testament the Jehovah.
  • In His Steps was published.

    This is an important date because In His Steps was written by a Kansas minister named Charles M. Sheldon. This book really talks about situations that would start with what would Jesus do. This book was one of the best-selling in the 19th century. Later after this book was published the Social Gospels promoted that the state and federal governments to step in and change the hours of work, and working conditions.
  • Dwight L. Moody Death

    Dwight L. Moody passed away in this year. The reason this is important is because he had become the most famous preacher of the age. He also had a conversion issue that was from business to religion. He never did receive his ordination, he let the lord help him open up a church.
  • Oklahoma Peyotist

    Oklahoma Peyotist organized into the Native American Church. This church though was banned in some states would win a measure of protection in some states. This is important because it is supposed to be a separation of church and state. This is something that changes that law. It was strong for the Navajo for Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Negro Burial Ground Discovery

    Negro Burial Ground Discovery
    Archaelogists examined ground that was located in lower Manhattan before the construction of a really expensive federal office building. They uncovered more than 400 graves of African Americans. This is significant because there were able to find remains of some people ancestors. This site was used from 1690’s until 1794. They had their own burial grounds, even though it was forgotten of, and most of the signs were gone.
  • Ghost Dance

    Ghost Dance
    This year is important because this is when the young 28 year old had a vision that he was on grassland with all the game. He was given instructions in this vision to give up warfare with everyone and even the whites. He believed that when the white people would leave, they would have their life back and also better. This quickly spread throughout the Great Plains and it is known as the Ghost Dance.
