The sepoys rebelled
Sepoys-Indian soldiers . They rebelled because they gossiped that their new Enfield rifles were greased with beef and pork fat. and to use the cartidges the soldiers had to bite off the ends. Both Hindus and Muslims who consider the cow sacred, and Muslims who didn't eat pork, didn't like the idea. So they refused to accept the cartidges and those who didn't accept went to jail. The next they all the sepoys rebelled. -
