WHERE:Cartier was born in Saint Malo, France. Cartier explored the Canadian coast, St. Lawrence river and he traveled the North West passage.
WHAT:He was unsuccessful in establishing a permanent settlement. HIs explorations of the St. Lawrence river opened up the interior of Canada to further exploration.
WHY:The King of France elected him to find the North West passage through the continent of North America to Asia. -

He was joined by Jaques Marquette. he visited several deferent native American tribes on the way and was also joined by a choctow Indian. his journey ended and he returned to Quebec in 1674. -
