Five Important Events of WWI

  • The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
For one important event of WWII I picked the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I picked the this event because this is basically plunged Europe into WWI. On June 28th, 1914 the Archduke had planned a trip to Serbia to cool down the commoners who though negatively of the Archduke's royal family. When the Archduke went to Serbia his tour path was published in the newspaper. That's where members of the secret organization the Black Hand conspired and assassinated him.
  • The Christmas Truce of 1914

    The Christmas Truce of 1914
Another Event I think is an important event of WWI is the Christmas Truce of 1914. This event wasn't at all really important to the war itself. Yet I still think it is important because it lets people see that soldiers are still people who like Christmas and soccer. I think it also shows that wars are fought by governments and not the soldiers. The soldiers knew that this war meant nothing to them and that the other side was human too. This is why I think it is an important event in WWI.
  • The Sinking of the Lusitania

    The Sinking of the Lusitania
The Lusitania was a British munitions ship disguised as a civilian ship. On May 7th 1915 German submarines fired and sunk the ship. This was a part of Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare campaign. 1,195 people died on that ship, most of them British, which wasn't a problem because Germany was at war with Britain but unfortunately, for Germany, there was 128 American causalities. This as well as other events would bring America into the War, which is why it is an Important event of WWI.
  • Battle of Somme

    Battle of Somme
The battle of Somme started on July 1st, 1916 and ended on November 18th, 1916. The battle of Somme was an allied offensive against Germany in Somme France. I choose this as an Important event because It shows well just how brutal the war was. It lasted almost 5 months and about 1 million people died. The battle was a stalemate for a long time but then finally the allies won, but at a high cost. This is why I chose the battle of Somme as an Important event of WWI.
  • The Interception of the Zimmermann Telegram

The Interception of the Zimmermann Telegram
The Zimmermann Telegram was an encrypted message meant for Mexico but was Intercepted by the British. The telegram described that in the event if America had joined the war Mexico would get land if they helped Germany fight America. Since the telegram was intercepted by the British they thought America should see it. When America got it America joined the war on the Allies side. America would then go on to be an important fighter in the war, which is why this is an important part of WW1.
