Open Door Notes
Open Door Notes were letters sent by JOhn Hay to leaders of imperialist nations to try to persuade them to share their trade rights with the United States. Hays tried to avoid the idea of any one nation having a monopoly, but rather them all have a little piece of China. This is important because it helps AMerica to become a World Power -
Platt Amendment
An agreement between the U.S. and Cuba stating that Cuba could not make treaties that might limit its independence or permit a foreign power to control any part of its territory, the U.S. reserved the right to intervene in Cuba, Cuba was not to go into debt, and the U.S. could buy or lease land on the island for naval and refueling stations.
I think that the Plsntiff Amendment was important because it mskes Cuba a protectorate, controlled by the U.S. We took over without actually taking over. -
Teddy Roosevelt's Trust Busting
Teddy Roosevelt's Anti-trust policy became quite known throughout the country. He filed 44 law suits in seven and a half years against members of trusts. I think that Roosevelts trust busting was important because it helped to limit corruption although there was no actual defination of a "trust." -

Seventeenth Amendment
This amendment gave the people the right to vote for their senetors. I think that this is important because it gets the ball rolling for the citizens of america to control and have a say in their government. -
Assaniation of Franz Ferdinand
Gavrillo Princip (a member of the Black Hand) shot and kills Franz and his wife Sophie. The Black Hand was a Serbian group that supported their nationalism. -

Germany Invades Belgium
Germans invaded Belgium because of a paranoid belief that the germans would have to fight a two front war with France and Russia. The stragey they used was called the Schlieffen Plan. This is important becasue it causes Europe to take sides and form alliances. -
Clayton Antitrust Act
The Clayton Antitrust Act was an addition to the Sherman Antitrust Act, companies could not sell goods to beat out competitiors and couldn't by competing company's stock to create a monopoly. It was important to the Progressive Era because it was a part of buisness reform. -
Lusitania Sinks
German U-Boats sunk British luxury liner (Lusitania) off the coast of Ireland. 128 Americans died in the sinking of the ship. This is important because this event enraged Americans because of the lives lost. -
Zimmermann Note
In 1917, the British intercepted a telegram from Germany's secretary Arthur Zimmermann. The telegram was meant for the German ambassador in Mexico. The messgae said that Germany would help Mexico "reaquire" the land that they lost to the United States if Mexico would join sides with Germany. The British gave the message to the U.S This is important because it was the last straw and the U.S. declares war. -
