Hernando de Soto
explored the southeast region of North America. He searched for gold, a colony, and a route from Mexico to the Atlantic. From 1539 to 1543, he explored starting in Florida and ending in Mexico. His men attacked the natives and stole from them. They then came across the Mississippi River. De Soto died before crossing the river but his men continued on. The survivors reached Mexico with nothing but hatred from the natives. -

Francisco Coronado
explored the southwest for two years (1540-42) in search of gold, glory and god. They did not discover gold or glory but they did manage to convert some natives to Christianity. They also discovered the Grand Canyon. The natives fought back against him causing Coronado to attack them killing and enslaving hundreds. -

, They held an expedition in from Mexico to New Mexico (1581-82). They encouraged settlement in this area. These men led by Francisco Chamuscado, discovered loads of silver and salt but also found around 130,000 natives in the area. -

Gaspar Perez de Villagra
Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá was the historian of the settlement in New Mexico. Sixteen years after the Chamuscado discovery, soldiers and explorers left to settle the area. They were led by Don Juan de Oñate. He ended up being sent back to Mexico due to his lack of caring for the safety of his people and his cruelty to the natives. In 1610 Pérez de Villagrá published an epic poem outlining the hardships of the expedition. -
