Birth
I was born in Berlin, Germany. My parents Gave me the name of Benjamin Burkhard. I was born into extreme poverty.Sometimes we had to scip meals. Also in the winterwe got very cold because we had littel money to pay for heat. I lived in terible conditions and, my father had a very hard time trying to find jobs. So when i got a older i started working and saving money so i could have enough money to start a new life in America. -
Reaching America
So when I was 16 the littel moey I had saved and the littel money my parents gave me I bought a ticket to go to America by myself. I was scared because I was far away from home without my parent. About two and a half weeks latter we finaly reached the New York harbor. The first thing i saw was the statue of liberty. Next, we arrived at Elis island. It was crazy everbody pushing and shoving to get of the ship. It was so exiting that we finaly reached america. -
Medical examination
When Got off the ship and heaed in the doors one of the frist thing that happened was for me to get a medical exam. They flipped my eye lids inside out to check for dieses. It realy hurt bad when they flipped my eyelids insied out. The lady next to me started crying because she failed her medical exam. I passed my medical exam and was aloud to eneter america. I exchanged my money for American money. Then I bought a ferry ticket to Manhattan. -
Getting a job in Boston,Ma
From New York I headed up to Boston by train to look for work. When I got to boston I found a construction company that was building scycrapers that needed workers so I signed up. My first day on the job I was sent to the top which was 25 floors up. I was so scared I was walking on a steel beam with nothing eles around me. After the first day the job got easier. I worked with the same company for wo years and i got moved up to forman. I was making a lot more money and my job was not as dangerous -
Buying a house in the suburbes
Finaly saved up enough money to bu a house in a suburban community. It was the first house I ever owned. It was so nice to have a house outside the city. Yet my house was close enough to work in the city. My forman job for the construction company gave me lot's of money to buy what I need. I had enough money to buy one of the first cars. I tried to come in contact whith the rest of my family in Germany but could never get an ansewer to my telagrams. -
Getting Married
I met a girl whose family came over from Ireland. Whe dated for a year before we got married. We lived in the house I bought in the suburbs. We had two children. I had enough money to buy them what the needed and what they wanted. when they grew up i sent them both to college. They both got good paying jobs.
