Frederick Griffith and Genetic Material
He was able to run experiments using S (smooth) strain, R (rough) strain, and mice to test for pneumonia. He found that the S strain killed the mice but the R strain didnt. His experiment later affected Oswald Avery's discovery. -
Oswald Avery and the Transforming Factor
Oswald discovered that DNA is the substance that controls the characteristics of organisms. He found that DNA is genetic material. He used a book published by Fredrick Griffith to begin his experiment. -
Erwin Chargaff's Rules
Chargaff found that the concentrations of adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine differed from one species to another. He also found that the concentration of adenine and thymine were usually about the same, as were guanine and cytosine. These became Chargaff's rules. -
Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase- DNA
They used a few different radioactive elements to find and label protiens and DNA found in viruses. They then identified which molecule the viruses inserted into the bacteria. -
James Watson, Francis Crick, and the Double Helix
They discovered that DNA has a double helix shape. Their discovery was based upon the work of Rosalind Franklin and the X-Rays she made of the DNA structure. -
Rosalind Franklin and the DNA Structure
Franklin used X rays to find out more about the DNA's structure. Her work helped James Wasston and Francis Crick discover the double helix shape.
