Joe McCarthy
Joe McCarthy and the State Department employees were involved with this event. McCarthy had a list of 57 State Department employees that were communist but he never proved it. At 11:39 AM they lifted off, and after 59 seconds black smoke was seen. 74 seconds after that it burst into flames and disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean. It took place on January 28, 1986 in Cape Canaveral, FL. This is important to history because it had a civilian passenger on the shuttle. The Challenger Explosion impacted Americans because they watched a civilian die and it was a big tragedy. -
