The public became more aware as to what was happening in the coasts and had the urge to actually do something about it. -
Act of Congress passed/enacted
Passed in 1972 to encourage coastal states to develop and implement coastal zone management programs. -
34 States Established Management Programs
Of 35 states there were 34 that implemented management programs; Washington being the first. -
Alaska withdrew from from the act
By operation of Alaska State law, the federally aproved Alaska Coastal Management expired, resulting in the withdrawl from the CZMA. -
Funding for Coastal Zone Management Act
Got $65 million from administrative grants, a coastal resource improvement program, coastal zone enhancement grants, and coastal nonpoint pollution control program.
