-Vikings had no desire to trade or communicate with natives and often killed those they came in contact with
-Native peoples retaliated by attacking Viking settlements to attempt to force them from the lane
-Vikings were forced to abandon their settlements and return home L'Anse aux Meadows, NFL became the recognized archeological site of this Viking settlement in 1960. -

John Cabot Sails from England and Reaches Newfoundland

-Giovanni Caboto, an experienced Italian navigator was granted permission from King Henry VII of England (patron) to seek out unknown lands, departing from Bristol, England
-Cabot landed somewhere on the northern coast of Newfoundland or Labrador, raising a cross and the banner of England to claim the territory for Christianity and the King
-Discovered very large amounts of cod
-Cabot continued to explore the North Atlantic coast for a month before returning to England -

Beothuk Tragedy
-Contact between the Beothuk and Europeans led to many misunderstandings, outbreaks of violence and death
-Europeans, in possession of guns, shot and killed the Beothuk peoples, wheras their only line of defence were spears, bows and arrows
-Still, very little is known of the Beothuk peoples 1501 CE
-Portugese entrepreneur Gaspe Corte Real captured and enslaved 57 Beothuk men and women during his second trip to Newfoundland
-Tragically, most died of disease on the voyage back to Portugal -

Jacques Cartier's First Voyage
-Jacques Cartier, experienced mariner who had travelled to Newfoundland and Brazil, was commisioned by King François I of France to sail to New World, find a passage to Asia, or find gold
-Departed from St. Malo, France April 20, 1534 and landed in Newfoundland 20 days later
-Spent 5 weeks exploring charted coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador
-Interacted with Aboriginal peoples in the area and "discovered" the name of Canada
-Later completed 2 more voyages to the New World -

-Samuel de Champlain, a soldier, seaman, explorer, geographer, and cartographer sponsored by King Henry I of England, first arrived Canada
