-European travellers sailed away from their homeland to discover a new world. Lead by Leif Ericsson.
-His father Erik the Red, discovered Greenland.
-According to "Saga of Erik the Red" Leif's discovery was an accident, lost on his way back to Norway.
-According to "Saga of the Greenlanders" the viking explorer set sail towards a strange land he had heard of.
-They discovered resources that would help them to survive. They built a town to establish a trading relationship with the Inuit. -

-The Iroquois Confederacy is also known as Iroquois League or 5 nations (6 as of 1722)
-"The people of the longhouse" were charatorized into the Mowhawk, Oneida, Onondage, Cayuga and Seneca. (Tuscarora)
-They played a strategic role in the struggle between the French and British.
-They were all in agreement that together, no one would distrub or distroy them. That was their only common interest. -

John Cabot reaches Newfoundland
-There was roughly 20 people aboard his ship, "Matthew"
-On his voyage to Asia he stumbled across North America.
-After 52 days at sea, Cabot claimed that piece of land as English territory.
-He reported what he found to the King, the land was full of spieces and foods, that the land discovered was close to Japan. -

Jacques Cartier first exploreds St. Lawrence region
-He was ordered by the king to find spices, gold and a passage of water from France to Asia.
-The St. Lawrence river cannot travelall the way to Asia but it is a significant waterway into areas of Canada.
-With 61 men on his ship Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence river to PEI.
-His voyage helped future explores, discover french-speaking canada. -

this event shows that Jacques Cartier thinks that the french culture is better than the rest of the "world". He explores the st. lawrence region with no regard for the aboriginal people already living there. -

The Algonquin people form alliance with Montagnais to the east
-Anything medal was highly priced and could be exchanged for a lot of fur.
-When Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence river he discovered Ironquian-speaking people on both sides of the river, between Montreal and Quebec.
-The French attacked causing the Algonquin and Montagnais people to stand together.
-After the French got the trading agreement they wanted, the Algonquin and Montagnais were left control of the St. Lawrence for the next 20 years. -
Samuel de Champlain establishes a French colony at Quebec City
-He came across the Iroquios village that Jacques Cartier made contact with, it was abandon.(due to the internal warefare or the deseases carried by the european; smallpox)
-Montreal was formally known as Hochelega.
-He had a hard time finding a friendly place to settle down.
-He was then married to Helene Boullie (12 years old) and recieved a dowry to help with "New France"
