In March of 1500 the king of Portugal sent off an ocean fleet. While they were supposed to go to Africa, they got off course and arrived mistakenly at Porto Seguro, Brazil on April 22, 1500. -

Brazil divided into twelve captaincies
The Portuguese split up the land into 12 captaincies to to people with connections to the crown. They were in charge of the region, establishing towns, have systems of justice, form militias, levy fees for the use of land, give plots of land to individuals, and had to promote colonization. At the end of the 1700's though, it came back to a public domain. -

In the attempt to greaten the power Portugal had over the church, they expelled the Jesuit colony. -

Tiradentes execution for wanting independence from Portugal
Tiradentes was a leader of a group who wanted full independence from Portugal with hopes of becoming the Brazilian Republic. However when a plan of rebellion was discovered he was hung. The day of his death is still a national holiday. -
