In repsonse to Juarez not paying his debts France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Mexico to get their money. The man in the picture is Napolean III and he was the leader of French at the time.

European countries landed in Veracruz. When Britain and Spain realized Napoleans aims they withdrew and made negotiations with Mexico.

French forces came with nearly 6,000 troops and the Mexicans had 2,000. In the end of the long battle the French retreated. The Mexicans only lost around 100 soldiers compared to the French losing nearly 600 soldiers.
