He was ruler for a little before he was captured. He was captured by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. And was kept prisoner. So nobody was the heir over the Inca. This happened in 1526 -

Sapa Inca
Sapa Inca (13th) decided to try and take over the kingdom of Quito even though Atahualpa was king. Quito was separated in two parts north and south. This happened in 1528 -

Civil War is coming
In 1529 It was coming close to the civil war. And Atahualpa had defeated his brother and became emperor. So he then ruled over the Inca unless anything happened to him. -

Later, while imprisoned by the Spaniards. Atahualpa gave specific orders to kill Huáscar in Jauja. While he was thinking that Huáscar would use Spaniards. In 1530. -

In 1531 During the Spanish conquest, a Spaniard Francisco Pizarro. Took control over Atahualpa and used him to rule over the Inca. After a long time of controlling Atahualpa he decided to stop. -

Once Francisco Pizarro stopped using Atahualpa he decided to execute him. After Atahualpa was dead the empire started falling apart. It was ¨out of control.¨ This was after 1533 when Atahualpa was already dead. -

Then as time went on many different people ruled over the Inca. After a long time the Inca territories started expanding. Eventually the empire got bigger and bigger. This was a long time after 1533 and on to the 1600s and farther.
