Americans were very upset about the tea act of 1773, so they dumped a ship load of tea in to the Boston harbor out of protest. -

President Thomas Jefferson authorizes purchase of the Louisiana territory from France and pretty much doubles the size of the United States. -

Abraham Lincoln elected the President of the United States
Shortly after his election, the Confederate States defect from the Union starting the Civil War. -
SC secedes from the Union.
They were the first state to do so. Within a few months, many other states, such as Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, would follow suit. -
The confederation is formed.
The southern states form their own country called the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis is their president. -
The war begins
hostilities began when Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter, a key fort held by the Union in South Carolina. -

Lincoln was assassinated 5 days after the surrender of Robert E. Lee at the end of the civil war. -
