Since Jacques Cartier couldn't find a water passage, he decided to claim the large land mass we know today to be Canada. -
The First French Settlement
In 1608, Sameul de Champlian sailed up the St. Lawrence River and founded the Quebec. Quebec was a trading post for 150 years. -
Explorers Exlpore the Mississippi
Two exploreers Father Marquette and Louis Joliet went to explore the Mississippi river. They hoped it would flow all the way to the West Coast, but they found out that it only goes south, so they returned to New France, broken-hearted. -
Claiming Louisiana
On this day, Robert de La Salle went to the mouth of the Mississippi River and planted the French Flag, thus claiming everything West of the river. He named it Louisana, after King Louis XIV
