Panama Canal
It's a 48-mile long canal. It was important because it made shipping easier and more effiecient. The United States powered through making the canal in about 10 years, which allowed us to have a two-ocean navy. -
U.S.S. Maine Explosion
The U.S.S. Maine exploding lead to the United States declaring war on Spain. This was important because the ship was on its way to rescue American citizens that were in danger. "Remember the Maine!" was a rallying cry. After the Maine exploded the public opinion favored the war. -
Spanish-American War
US declared war on Spain on the 20 of April, 1898. It was important because we gained the Philippines and through the Rough Riders, under the command of Roosevelt, they helped win the battle of San Juan Hill. -
Philippiean-American War
This war started because the Philipieans didn't like how the United States were running things. I think this is important because we lost 4,000 lives and 400 million dollars which was 20 times more than we paid to get the Philippieans. -
Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States. He played a very important role in America's history. He was the assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy, and he helped support the war agaisnt Spain in 1898. He lead the Rough Riders and the public knew him as the hero for the battle of San Juan Hil. When he returned he was elected governor of New York, later elected vice president then became the President of The United States in 1901. -
Food and Drug Act
The food and drug act made companies have to label their food or medicine products and be truthful about it. This is very important because without it we wouldn't know if there's a harmful ingredient in a food or drug. It would also be very helpful to those with alergies. -
Alliance system
Alliance systems are when groups of people or countries get together and decide to help each other. The alliance system was a big factor of WW1 because if no one had their alliances or "friends" come fight with them, there wouldn't have been as many counties in the war. -
WW1 begins
WW1 was a war of Germany, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire against Brittain, France, and the United States. This was very important because it was the bloodiest war up to the time. During the war new war equipment was evented such as tanks, the machine gun, air crafts, and gases which changed warfare a lot. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars because of all of its destruction. -
Keating-Owen Act
The Act prohibited the shipment or delivery of goods across state lines if the goods were prouduced with child labor. This is important because it was a start of banning child labor. As much as im sure companies still risked it, some companies had to of gotten rid of the child workers so they can sell their products. -
United States joins war
The United States ended their nutrality on April 6 in 1917. We joined the Allies' side and fought for a little over a year with them. This is important because our fresh and enthusiastic soldiers played a big role in fighting. The central powers weren't able to replace the lost soldiers they had that the allies were due to the U.S. We played a major role in fighting the war in the last few months. -
The Hundred Days Offensive
The Hundred Days Offensive was the beginning of the end of the war. The allies won the war! This was very important because this bloody war was finally came to an end. Soldiers could return home and no more lives were at the threat of being lost. It was also an oppertunity for the countries to reach an agreement. -
18th Ammendment (Prohibition)
It was ratitified in 1919 and took effect almost a year later. Prohibition made the manufacture, sale, and transportation of liquore illegal. It's important to our history because people took action to make a change. They thought that if we prohibited it, the average citizen's morals would improve which was a big part of the progressivism era. -
Treaty of Versailles
The treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty that ended world war 1. It was important because an agreement was finally met even though it made Germany look bad. 33 billion dollars was paid back to the allies and Europe was redrawn. -
19th Ammendment
The 19th ammendment gave women the right to vote. It's important because it gave women a say in our country and it was a start of making them more equal to men. -
Become a 50 state nation
We added Alaska and Hawaii to our country. It was important because it gave the United States acess to more resources. Hawaii gave us a naval base as Pearl Harbor.
