The Ghost
In the opening of the play, the King's ghost is hanging around the castle battlements. The guards don't like this and they summon Horatio to come see the ghost. Horatio informs them that this ghost is indeed the dead king. -
The New King
King Claudius, the dead king's brother, is married to Queen Gertrude, who is Hamlet's mother. The King is trying to avoid war with Norway and he also has to deal with how much Hamlet dislikes him because of marrying his mother two months after the King's death. -
Hamlet and the ghost
Hamlet meets his father's Ghost. The Ghost tells him that he was poisoned by King Claudius. and he wants Hamlet to avenge his death. The catch is that he doesn't want Gertrude to be punished for remarrying. -
Lord Polonius and King Claudius
Polonius has hs children spied on and he learns from his daughter, Ophelia, that she met Hamlet. Polonius believes that she rejected him and that this is the source of Hamlet's wierd behavior. King Cladius is informed of the behavior by Polonius and instructs Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to find out what is going on with Hamlet -
Hamlet's plan
Hamlet makes a speech about how great man is. He plans on using a play to see if King Claudius is really responsible for the death of King Hamlet. -
King Cladius's thoughts on Hamlet
King Claudius and Polonius spy on Hamlet's and Ophelia's private converstaion. Hamlet is suspicious and believes that Ophelia is spying on him and becomes hostile. King Claudius decides that he is going to send Hamlet to England because he thinks that he is dangerous becaus he is no longer lovesick. -
Hamlet's Play
The play that King Claudius sees, "The Murder of Gonzago," causes him to react guiltily. He admits that his fear of Hamlet and sends him away to England with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He admits that he commited the crime in solitude and realizes that he cannot escaspe punishment. -
Queen Gertrude's Agreement
Gertrude tires to reprimand Hamlet, but it does not work. Instead he reprimands her until the Ghost tells him to be kind to the Queen. Gertrude agrees to stop living with King Claudius. -
Polonius's death
During Hamlet's confrontation with his mother, Polonius is hidden in the tapestry. Hamlet hears him and thinks that he is Claudius spying on them. He draws his sword and stabs him through the tapestry. -
Death
After Claudius sends Hamlet to England, he plans to have him killed. Ophelia drowns herself in the river after her father's death and Laertes decides that he is going to get revenge for his father's and sister's deaths. -
Hamlet vs. Laertes
Laertes decides to fence Hamlet and Claudius poisoned the tip of his blade so that when Hamlet is struck, he will be die. Claudius also poisoned a goblet for Hamlet if the first idea failed. Claudius's plan fails because Hamlet wins the first round and refuses to drink from the goblet. -
Everyone dies except one person
Gertrude drinks from the poisoned goblet and dies. Hamlet is wounded by Laertes, but does not die right away. Laertes is struck by his own blade and dies, after he tells Hamlet that Claudius is responsible for Gertrude's death. Hamlet kills Claudius with the poisoned sword and goblet. Fortinbras, a Norwegian prince who lead an army to Denmark, enters and finds everyone dead, other than Horatio. Fortinbras takes over the kingdom
