Yuki Chang

  • Born

My name is Yuki Chang. I was born in June 27, 1911. My father worked on a farm, and helped with the mining. He sent us money when he could. My mother was always in a depressed state. We only saw him a couple times a month.
  • Angel Island.

My father sent us a letter every few weeks. We got on telling us about the immagration to Angel Island. My mother thought it'd be a good idea because we could be a family again. My father was willing to work for a low amount of money. So, we packed out things and made our way to Angel Island.
  • The Chinese Exclusion Act

There were a lot of Chinese immagrating. This act showed a lot of prejudice against us. The Chinese were banned from immagrating for 10 years. Taxes were on new immagrants and banned specific groups such as convict and people with mental illnesses.
  • Jobs

Americans were not fans of us. Most feared us immagrating to their country. A lot of Chinamen, including my father, were competing for jobs. Some even took other peoples jobs. My father got a job in a sweatshop. These places were disgusting. They were crowded and dangerous. They got 10$ a week.
  • Deported

At one point our family was in danger. We had to prove someone in our family are a U.S. citizen. My mother told them her granfather was from here. If they caught our lie then we could have been in serious trouble. My father or mother would have been deported back to China. I would have been left alone in America.
