Gunpowder plot
This happened on the 5th of November when a group of Catholics decided they were going to blow up the House of Parliament with the king and members of parliament were inside. This failed because the person who was going to lite the gunpowder (Guy Fawkes) was caught and got tortured until he confessed and was after beheaded along with the others that helped. -
The beheading of King Charles I
The Roundheads won the civil war and wanted the king to be executed in public for everyone to see. Disagreements between the king and parliament led to the civil war. This was because the king would only talk to parliament when he needed money and when parliament refused to give him money this time a war started. This was also a reason the people were fine with him dying. They felt like he was just using their money and nothing else. -
The Intellectual Movement
The Intellectual Movement started in the 18th century. It was a time when certain thinkers and writers began to believe they were enlightened and had to enlighten others. They believed that human reason would be used to combat ignorance and that it could build a better world. They wanted to find ways to apply reason to improve the human condition. -
Eli Whitney’s Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney made his cotton gin in 1791. His cotton gin would separate the seed from the cotton quicker than any person could. The cotton gin made slavery seem more needed as it would work faster than the slaves could pick the cotton. -
Abolition of the SlaveTrade Bill
In 1807 the Abolition of the SlaveTrade Bill was passed. This made it illegal to buy and sell people in England. William Wilberforce, and member of parliament, was applauded by parliament for getting the bill passed.
