I chose this event because it reaction to the integration of West Germany into NATO in 1955. The cause was the desire of a treaty to prevent another war and the effect was the ability to call on the member state to come to the defense of any member attacked by an outside force and it set up a unified military command under Marshal Ivan S. Konev of the Soviet Union. -

The Colombian government announced that it would allow Colombian citizens to change their gender on identity documents without first undergoing gender-reassignment surgery or obtaining permission from a medical professional. I chose this event because equality and acceptance of transgender people has been an issue that has recently gained popularity in many parts of the world. The cause was the desire for transgender people to have fundamnetal rights and the effect was the new policy. -

I think that the spread of Bird Flu in Africa is an important event happening today because it is decimating poultry farms and stoking fears the virus will jump from birds to humans. I chose this event because If the virus continues to spread, it could affect more than 330 million people across West Africa. The cause is the infected birds and the possible effects are hurt food security and human health. -

An important event happening in the Middle East today is the destruction caused by ISIS. The United Nations has held ISIS responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes. I chose this event because it is tragic and the effects have stretched far beyond its origins. The cause is the desire of ISIS to control territory under Islam and the effects are human rights violations and terrorism. -
Asia- Flooding
Torrential monsoon rains in the aftermath of Cyclone Komen continue to cause flooding in India, Bangladesh and other South Asian countries, leaving hundreds dead and millions displaced. I chose this event because it is affecting millions of people right now and it's an issue that deserves to be brought to the attention of the whole world. The cause is monsoon rains and the effect is the damage done to private and public property and many injuries/deaths. -
Europe- Brexit
David Cameron’s electoral triumph has brought the prospect of a British withdrawal from the EU one step closer. The prime minister has vowed to reshape Britain’s ties with Europe before putting EU membership to a vote by 2017. I chose this event because Britain's exit remain controversial and would hugley impact Britain and the EU. The cause is Britain's desire to fix economic problems that may have resulted in it's inclusion in the EU and the effect is it's possible exit. -
Former USSR- Russia's recession
Russia's economy is now contracting at the fastest pace since the depths of the 2008-09 global financial crisis as it continues to be buffeted by low oil prices and a sharp decline in tax revenues. I chose this event because Russia is now this year's fastest shrinking decent-size economy. The causes are low oil prices, political tensions, and structural ineffeciencies. The effects are inflation in Russia and a poor economy.
