Michael Faraday’s dynamo
English chemist Michael Faraday discovered the connecton between magnetism and electricity. His discovery led to the dynamo , a machine that generated electricity by moving a magnet through a coil of copper wire. Faraday used the electricity to power an electric motor, and his discoveries led to the devlopmentof electrical generators. -
Taiping rebellion
The failure of the Quin dynasty to resist the Western powers led some Chinese to belive that the dynasty hadlost the mandate of heaven. That befief led to a series of rebllions starting in 1850. In the 1850s the most serious rebellion was led by Hong Xiuquan, who belived that that he was the brother of Jesus. -
Sepoy Mutiny in India
In 1857 these strained relations exploded into a rebellion, the Sepoy Munity. Sepoy were Indian Soldiers. The spark that set off their rebellionwas the introduction of a new type of British rifile. -
Karl Marx’s “Das Kapital”
Marx produced the first volume of "Das Kapital". One of its evils, Marx said, was how capitalism dirupts the relationship between labor and profit. He thought there should be a direct connectionbetween one's work and one's pay. -

In the early 1900's, Japan was building an empire in the east and viewed Russia as a threat to its plans. As a result, in 1904 Japanese forces attacked and eventually defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese War. The defeat shocked manny Russians and added to grow unrest and calls for change. -

NAFTA is formed
Events of the 1990s brought even more concern to Mexicans. In 1992 Mexico, the United States and Canada signed the North Amerian Free Trade (NAFTA), a free-trade eliminated tariffs on trade between the three countries. NAFTA was designed to improve the countries' economies, but many Mexicans feared the economic effects of increased competition from foreign imports. -
WTO is formed
In 1995, GATT was replaced by the World Trade Organization (WTO). Some 150 countries are members of the WTO, which monitors national trade policies and helps resolve trade disputes. A group of oil-rich nations, OPEC works to control the production and price of oil.
