All the countries in Europe wated to expand their land and share their culture. When Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria-Hungry, was assasinated by a Surbian, Austria-Hungry declared war on Russia. -
Overthrowing Tsar Nicholas II
The Russian Revolution began because the tsars were absolute rulers and the conditions of WWI made life very difficult for the people. During the Russian Revolution, Tsar Nicholas II was thrown out of power. Vladmir Lenin took power later in the year. -
Trench Warfare & Treaty of Versailles
Trench Warfare was when troops would dig trenches so they would not get hit or killed by the machine guns during battle. The treaty of Versailles was signed in 1918 and it ended WWI. It was signed in Versailles by the Central Powers. It limited their trade and made them pay money to America, Russia, Britain, France and Serbia. -
The Rise of Communism & Joseph Stalin
Communism is a form of government where the government controls the businesses and money. Everyone gets paid the same amount. It seemed like a good idea at the time but it was brutal for the Russian people. After Vladimir Lenin was executed Joseph Stalin took over. He was a brutal ruler and was said to kill up to ten million of his own people. -
The Roaring Twenties
Starting in the mid-1920s, America was in a time of prosperity. The economy was growing rapidly and people were enjoying their wealth; the US was richer than it had ever been. Many bought electric appliances and cars for the first time. Jazz and other art forms also flourished. -
The Great Depression - Hoovervilles and Stock Market
In 1929 the stock market crashed starting the Great Depression, but this was not the only depression in the world. Many other places were experiencing a depression too. During the Great Depression many people were out of work. People didn't have jobs and were loosing their homes, so towns popped up. These towns were called Hoovervilles. They were made out of trash and any other materials people could find on the streets. -
America During The Great Depression
During the Great Depression one in four workers were unemployed. Many people took to traveling; looking for work as over a million people became homeless. People did not have enough food to eat, and men would often wait in lines for hours to get a hot meal from soup kitchens. -

New Deal
In this 'New Deal' the government focused on the '3Rs' Relief, Recovery, and Reform. The deal was created to help people get work recover from the depression and reform to prevent another depression. The deal might have gone on for five years but it was not just one deal, in fact it was two deals. the first form 1933-1934 and the second form 1935-1938. -

WWII - Nazi Germany
Adolf Hitler, a persuasive political leader, took advantage of the troubling times in Germany. Hitler led the Nazi Party, and promised to make Germany great again. Hitler eventually became the dictator of Germany. Nazi Germany was buliding up its armed forces and, using threats and military force, Hitler gained control of the lands that bordered Germany. -

The Holocaust
The Holocaust was when the Nazi's (an army group of Germany) rose up and started to capture Jewish men, woman, and children. They put them in concentration camps and treated them horribly. They gave them next to no food and killed them if they did anything wrong. It is estimated that around six million Jew's died in the Holocaust. -
Bombing of Pearl Harbor
Japan, along with Italy, had sided with Germany in the war. The US was not part of the war until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The US then sided with the Allied Powers. -
The Atomic Bomb - Japan
In 1945 Germany had already surrendered but Japan kept fighting. President Harry S Truman decided against invading Japan. He had anther option though, The Atomic Bomb. At the time the U.S. was the only country with this weapon. The U.S. dropped it of two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Over 100,00o people died and after this Japan surrendered of September 2, 1945. -
The Cold War - Communism vs. Capitalism
The Cold War was the period of tension between the US and Soviet Union. The US and Soviet Union had different governments - the US was capitalist and the Soviet Union was communist. By 1949 most nations were on one side or the other. Also in 1949, communism was brought into China and the Soviet Union developed the atomic bomb, which caused the US' concerns to increase. This period lasted 45 years. -
North Korea
Durring the cold war there were some hot spots. In the middle of one of the hot spost was North Korea. the communist North Korea invaded the non-communist South Korea. Durring the war the U.S and several other democratic countries sent their troupes to help South Korea. The was then ended in 1953 in a stalemate. -

Vietnam
In the 1960s the US sent troops to support South Vietnam and fight against communism. Vietnam was divied; North Vietnam was communist and South Vietnam was noncommunist. Millions of Vetnamese died and thousands of US troops died as well. North Vienam defeated South Vietnam and the entire country became communist in 1975. -
The End of the Cold War
In 1991 the Cold War finally ended after 44 years of threats. It ended because the communist rule in the Soviet Union had collapsed. Now most of Eastern Europeans even rejected communism. After the communist rule collapsed the Soviet Union broke up into several independent nations, but the biggest and most powerful nation, Russia, was communist. Even now though Russia is friendlier with the United States.
