Invasion of Afghanistan
invasion of AfghanistanThis invasion was in response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers, Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan under President George Bush. American armed forces are still there today but will be withdrawn in the year 2014. It is hard to believe that the war has lasted 14 years. I have a cousin who is stationed in Afghanistan. My prayers are for him to remain safe from harm. -

My mother was diagnosed with cancer.
My mother was diagnosed with cancer for the first time in my life right after the birth of my brother. I was scared and not really sure what it meant to have cancer. My mother got me a book that explained what cancer was and how it affects people. Overall, I was afraid I was going to lose my mother to this terrible and dreaded disease. In the end, my mother beat this disease and is a cancer survivor. -

Gulf of Mexico BP oil spill
BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded causing 4,000,000 to 11,000,000 barrels of oil leaking in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion killed 11 workers but severely affected the sealife and welfare of many people. Many people did not go on vacation in the gulf due to the oil leak. We were affected by not getting to enjoy the gulf, fearing that we would be swimming in oil. I love the beach and this did not let me get to play in the water like I normally would on the beach. -
