Original 13 Colonies
The Colonists gained control of the 13 Colonies by defeating Great Britian and winning the land.
The Declaration of Independence was the statement of the Second Continental congress that defined the colinists rights and declared their desire to be independent from Great Britian. The purpose was to anounce the colonies seperation from England and it stated why they were seeking freedom.
The American Reveloution lasted for 8 years. It weakened the economy because of the cost of the war. -
Northwest Territory
The Treaty of Paris in 1783 gave the land to the colonists.
Illinois, Indianna, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin are the states that were formed from this land.
To become a state 60,000 people have to live there. they have to have their own constitution and have a govenor to be able to join the union as a state. -
Louisiana Purchase
The United States bought this land from Napolean Bonaparte of France.
The MIssissippi River and the City of New Orleans because the settlers needed access to the river and the port for travel and trade.
President Jefferson bought this land for 15 million dollars.
The purchase of this land doubled the size of the United States. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The Southerners were upset with the Seminole Indians because they were raiding U.S towns. They were also aiding runaway slaves.
President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson and his troops to the Florida Border and Jackson Invaded Florida and took over Military Posts and overthrew the Governor. It was unconstitutional because he did not have U.S permission.
The U.S got Florida and gave up what is now Texas. -
Manifest Destiny
The Belief of Manifest Destiny was that the U.S was destined to expand across the Continent to the Pacific Ocean and spread its democratic, economic and religious values.
The Americans believed that they had been chosen by god to expand westward and control new lands -
Texas Annexation
Annex means to take control of land and add it to a country.
Americans came to Texas in search of land.Mexicans offered 640 acres of land to each settler. Southerners were not allowed to have slaves. A Declaration of Independence and a Constitution were written and a president chosen. Santa Anna was defeated and signed a treaty making Texas free and independent from Mexico. Texas was almost bankrupt and Mexico still claimed them. Texas would add another slave state. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue that led to the Mexican/ American War was that the Mexican government rejected the claim that the Rio Grande River marked the southern border of Texas. The Treaty that ended the war was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The states that were created from the cession were California, Nevada, Utah , most of Arizona and New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Whyoming. It increased the size of the U.S by 25%. -
Oregon Territory
The country that originally shared control of the Oregon Territory with the U.S was Great Britian. The U.S was trying to avoid going to war with Great Britian over Oregon and signed a treaty to set a new boundary. The current U.S states created out of the Oregon Territory were Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Western Montanna. -
Gadsen Purchase
The U.S agreed to make the Gadsden Purchase to set continental boundaries to avoid future border issues between the U.S and Mexico. The U.S paid 10 million dollars for the Gadsden Purchase. The present day states that were formed were southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The Gadsden Purchase completed the idea of Manifest Destiny because all of the land from the east coast to the west coast belonged to the U.S. and the country was now unified.
