British Cession
During Monroe's first term, Britain and the U.S. signed a treaty that established boundaries between the U.S. and Canadian territories at the 49th parallel. This treaty was known as The Treaty of 1818. -

Mexican Cession
Mexico ceded the region of the modern day southwestern United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. -
Gadsden Purchase
Mexico was forced to abandon Texas and to cede to the United States the territory now including most of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Nevada. The United States, in return, gave $15,000,000 and assumed responsibility for paying $3,000,000 in claims of American citizens against the Mexican Government.
