The Indian Removal Act was signed into law by President Andrew Jackson. The act was to remove Native Americans from their homes to take the land. It mainly affected the Cherokee Indian tribe. -
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was the trail that the Native Americans took to leave their homes when the Indian Removal Act started. Many Native Americans suffered from diseases and starvation. About 60,000 died during this journey. It lasted from 1831-1839. -
The Alamo
The Alamo was a 13 day battle between Texas and Mexico. President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Of Mexico launched an assault on the US killing all the Texans. -
Texas Gaining Independence
Texas gained independence by The Battle of San Jacinto. The Texans killed 630 Mexicans and captured 700 more. They captured Santa Anna the next day forcing him to sign a treaty granting Texas independence. -
Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail was a 2000 mile wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. Travelers often had to leave possessions behind to lighten the weight of the wagon. Many people got diseases and died. -
Texas annexed by U.S.
Texas was annexed in 1845 as the 28th state. There were some arguments about whether to annex Texas or not because people were scared that Texas would join the union as a slave owning state. -
US Mexican War
The US Mexican war was fought in 1846 because the Mexicans thought that Texas was still their land even though Texas was annexed by the US. This battle lasted almost 2 years. -
Mormon trail
The mormon trail was when Joesph Smith and other settlers had to keep traveling becuase natives kept making them leave. Smith got killed and Brigham Young took over and they finally ended up in Utah. -
Mexican Cession
The Mexican Cession was the end of the US Mexican war. Santa Anna gave away half of their land for 15 million dollars. -
California Gold Rush
The Gold Rush was when people from all over the country went to California to mine for gold. It caused a lot of problems for California becuase they had a population problem. People were kicked off their land, there were crimes, murders etc. -
California Becomes a state
California became a state on September 9, 1850. Even though it was part of the US 2 years before this. It was the 31st state in the union. California didn't have a lot of settlers until the California Gold Rush. -
Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase was a treaty between the US and Mexico. The US agreed to pay $10 million for a portion of Mexico which later became part of Arizona and New Mexico.
