    "Kilroy was here"
    He is essentially a meme. He was used as a universal message among American soldiers and even other allies during WWI and WWII.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War started when the North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea. The United States came to South Korea's aid. There was a lot of back and forth across the 38th parallel but finally the war came to an end in 1953 with 5 million soldiers and civilians losing their lives.

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    This court case eventually became known as the greatest supreme court cases in history with it ending racial segregation within public school systems. Although the decision did not succeed in fully desegregating public education in the United States, it put the Constitution on the side of racial equality. It set the civil rights movement into a full revolution.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The Vietnam war was a long, costly war that put the communist North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its main ally, the United States. More than 3 million people were killed in the war and more than half were Vietnamese civilians. Opposition against the war was strong in America and Nixon ordered the withdrawal of troops in 1973.

  • Suez Crisis Canal

    Suez Crisis Canal
    Israeli armed forces pushed into Egypt toward the Suez Canal after Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalized the canal in July of that same year, initiating the Suez Crisis. The Israelis were joined by the British and French forces. At the end, all troops were withdrawn.
  • "Little Rock Nine"

    "Little Rock Nine"
    The Little Rock Nine were the nine African American students involved in the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School. Their entrance sparked a crisis when the Arkansas governor called in the National Guard to stop them from entering. President Eisenhower responded by sending them to escort the nine into the school and the National Guard remained the duration of the school year.
  • Berlin Wall

    Berlin Wall
    On August 13 of 1961, the communist German government, began building a wall between east and west Germany. The reason behind this was to keep the west Germans from coming into East Germany. The Berlin Wall stood until November 9, 1989, when the head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they wanted to. This caused some to pick at the walls and try to bring it down.

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The 13-Day confrontation. The US was trying to deal with Cuba, especially after the failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961. The US sought to threaten their supporters, the USSR, by planting missile facilities in Italy and Turkey, but this would cause the USSR to engage in helping Cuba secure their own missiles. After a long standoff from both sides, they would come to agree and dismantle their missiles.

    They were established to deal with the mass removal of postal workers due to the war. There were simply too many locations for the current workers to deal with as cities also continued to grow and the amount of mail that existed increased. A lot of business letters were increasing as industries continued to grow, and social security checks needed to be delivered. The ZIP Code helped the postal service deliver mail a lot more efficiently.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    The village was believed to have been a stronghold of the National Liberation Front. The Charlie Company, an American Military Division, was sent to the village to eradicate it under the idea that the village housed Viet Cong soldiers. These soldiers ended up murdering several civilians and their murder spree was heavily covered, but once it was discovered by the media it helped to plummet the already demoralized war effort.

  • Ping-Pong Diplomacy

    Ping-Pong Diplomacy
    The interaction of two foreign players helped to politically tie America to China. China had invited the American Ping-Pong team after noticing the affair that occurred between China's best player, Zhuang Zedong and US's Glenn Cowan. Zedong took the initiative and kindly greeted Cowan and their friendship helped to spark a political move for Chairman Mao. Mao invited the USA team to come and play within the Republic of China, and this helped to pave the way for Nixon's future visit.
  • Iran Contra Affair

    Iran Contra Affair
    This was the illegal distribution of weapons under the order of President Reagan's administration to supply Iran with weapons. The Democratic elections of the past had directly set up the Boland Amendment to restrict US help with the Contras in Nicaragua. The deal was to gain back American hostages as well as gaining a better relationship with Lebanon.

  • George H. W. Bush's Inauguration

    George H. W. Bush's Inauguration
    -Bush's administration would help to re-unify Germany. The Soviet Union would have 3-4 years to move out their army.
    -Saddam Hussein would invade Kuwait in 1990, and Bush sent troops and allied with Arab nations to deal with this issue. This would be known as the Persian Gulf War.
    -Signed the Clean Air Act of 1990 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
