Sectionalism
Disagreements between the different regions. One disagreement in 1819 arose when congress considered Missouri's application to enter the union as a slave state. -
Mcculoch vs. Maryland
Case between state and bank employee who refused to pay his tax, the case went all the way to the supreme court, the court considered it constitutional. -
Missouri Compromise
A conflict that was settled about Missouri applying for statehood, it was passed by congress in 1820. -
Santa fe trail
The Santa Fe Trail was an important path west that stretched from Missouri to Santa fe. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
Treaty that settled all border disputes between Spain and U.S.A., Spaingave East Florida to U.S.A. and U.S.A. gave up texas. The treaty was signed in 1819 however it did not go into effect until 1821. -
Monroe Doctrine
American policy warning European powers not to interfere with USA. It was issued by the president on December 2nd 1823. -

When congress placed a high tariff on imports, nick named by angry southerners. -
Nullification Crisis
Conflict between the supporters and the opponents of nullification deepened. This conflict was between calhoun and his opponents, calhoun later resigned as the vice president. -
State's right's doctrine
A doctrine that stated that since the states had formed the national government , state power should be greater than federal power, advanced by calhoun in a protest. -
Spoils System
The practice of giving government jobs to political backers. Created by President Jackson whenever he started rewarding his supporters with government. -
Indian Removal Act
Act passed by congress in fear of Jackson that authorized the removal of Native Americans who live east of the Mississippi river. -
Indian Territory
U.S. land in what is now oklahoma where Natives were moved to. It was argued that removing indians would remove them from conflict. -
Whig Party
A political party formed to oppose Jackson, they were created to make the point that Jackson was using his power like a king. The whig party favored the idea of a weak president and a strong congress. -
Alamo
An abandoned mission that became an important battle site.People like Davy Crockett and Colenal Jim joined the alamo's defense during the battle. -
Trail of Tears
In 1838, the Cherokees were forced to march 800 miles , and almost 1/4 of the 18,000 died on the way. -
Oregan Trail
Settlers moving to Oregan traveled 2,000 to get too Oregan. -
Manifest Destiny
Everyone was heading west to take land and people called it America's Manifest Destiny to settle land in the West. -
Donner Party
Western travelers that were stranded in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. They were found 1847 with almost half of them dead. -
California Gold Rush
Sutter and Marshal discovered gold in a river and the word spread and everyone migrated to California in search for gold. -
Treaty of Gaudalupe Hidalgo
In 1848 U.S.A. and Mexico signed a treaty ending the war and had Mexico turn over much of its northern territory. -
Forty-Niners
Miners who recieved word of gold in California and decided to Migrate there in search of it. -

The Gadsden Purchase is a region of present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico that was purchased by the United States in a treaty signed on December 30, 1853 by James Gadsden
