Timing Matters

    Day 1
    Collaboratively establish procedures with students to ensure a sense of ownership. Discuss the relevance/importance of these procedures. Hold students accountable by having them sign the agreed-upon expectations. Photocopy this form and send a copy home to guardians to be used for discussion regarding school expectations. Notify guardians that a form is being sent home regarding classroom procedures and expectations. Have the parents sign and return the form.

    Day 2
    Collect signed forms and address any questions. Allow students to make revisions if necessary. Post the agreed upon expectation in a visible and accessible area. Rehearse the procedures without consequences. Allow students to understand the expectations. Provide reminders.
  • Day 3

    Day 3
    Continue to practise classroom expectations and procedures consistently giving reminders if necessary.
    Use positive reinforcement for following classroom expectations. Hold a discussion regarding consequences for not following classroom expectations. Be sure that students have a voice and that their ideas are included.
  • Day 4

    Day 4
    Demonstrate consequences for not following classroom procedures and expectations so help students understand exactly consequences look like. Have students practise with one another.
    Continue to use positive reinforcement for good behaviour and use reminders as well as the newly established consequences consistently to deter undesired behaviour.
