    The Louisiana Purchase

    For more than a decade, New Spain fought against U.S. expansionism. This event is the reason the Spanish empire was left in the ruins, leading to Texas becoming a part of Mexico which is independent. This rebellion occurred alongside the Mississippi river. It lasted a decade from 1790 to 1800 (Teja 103). The significance of the event is that Spanish officials recognized the U.S. expand to be dangerous because the imperialization of Britain. This purchase doubled the size of the U.S. at the time.
  • The Death of Philip Nolan

    The Death of Philip Nolan
    Nolan was an Irish-American who wanted to learn about Indian Trade opportunities in Texas. He took advantage of the livestock trade so he would be able to trade with the Texas Indians. This trade occurred between the Texas and Louisiana border (Teja 105). Some time in March 1801, Nolan died by the Spaniards because he was sought out to be a spy. The significance of this event is that Nolan was never proved to be a spy, yet was killed, even though the people with him spoke they were innocent.

    The Crown
    The Crown and the advisors were building their empire in Madrid. This led to the people being ignored, as they were acting selfishly. Around 1804, the Crown started to confiscate assets from the church (Teja 115). This happened in Spain, from all the churches. Because of the assets being taken, the churches were no longer deemed to be the largest available sources in the capital, meaning that the Crown was abusing their authority and power.

    Defense of the Texas Frontier

    Governor Cordero was leading the area of defense around the frontier, but was struggling with holding it off. The Anglo-Americans at this time were attempting to take the land away. This happened over a period of 5 years of Tejanos holding off their land from the Anglos. It occurred along the Texas Northern Frontier (Teja 108). This event is important because it is when they were depending on the increasing of the population, but were struggling in terms of holding off the land from the Anglos.
  • The Growth of Immigrants

    The Growth of Immigrants
    Governor Cordero requested permission in order to found towns. He attempted to found them for the Louisiana emigrates and native Tejanos. This occurred on the Trinity and Brazos River where Cordero had gotten the towns (Teja 110). In late January, agricultural land and titles to houses were being issued. This is important because it was the plan to adjust to the growth of immigrants.

    The Neutral Ground Agreement

    Francisco Viana, General Wilkinson, and Simon Herrera were involved in the agreement of neutral ground. Wilkinson sent a message, proposing that the Spaniards wouldn't recross the river (Teja 108). This event took place near the Sabine River for almost a week in 1806. This event is important because people were getting ready for war since there was a violation of the Spanish territory. They wanted to come to an agreement so that mistakes would not be repeated, and they could avoid going to war.
  • Hidalgo's Speech

    Hidalgo's Speech
    The criollos and mestizos conspired together to bring down the Government. Too much economic and political turmoil was causing the people to go against their stated beliefs. The town of Dolores is where the conspiracies started. This was in the month of September in 1810 (Teja 117). Hidalgo never said that Mexico would have independence, but the Mexicans believed they should govern their own country. This led to Hidalgo giving a cry to convince the people.

    The Revolt

    The Casas revolt took place early in the year of 1811. This occurred in the province of San Antonio (Teja 118). Casas was overthrown by his supporters after a couple of months, past Hidalgo's death, leading to Manvel Salcedo governing the province that was much different in March, than it was in January of 1811. There was a short supple of everything and Salcedo still didn't trust the military. It was due to this, that preparations for invasion of Texas came into consideration from the Anglos.

    Battle of Medina

    People were forced to abandon their homes, the only place they knew because of this battle. An example is Villarreal who left his ranch. This took place at Corpus Christi Bay in 1817 (Teja 141). They had to leave such places because of the raids, but Villarreal was able to later on reestablish his ranch in 1824, after the battle. This goes to show the significance of this battle that left the people with no choice but to leave their houses, later having to make them again for their future lives.
  • The Long Expedition

    The Long Expedition
    A party of 120 men crossed the Sabine and basically took over Nacogdoches. The people then organized a government to declare independence on Texas. This happened in the area of the Sabine. The event occurred in 1819 (Teja 128). The importance of this event is that there was adjustment to the boundaries and territories in that area, posing as a threat against the Spanish Sovereignty in Texas. Stephen Long who led the expedition established a small government known as the Republic of Texas.
