the oldest school for the deaf in the U.S It was founded April, 15, 1817 in Conneticut by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Dr. Mason Cogswell and Laurent Clerc. -

Brown vs Board of Education
opened the door for families of children with disabilities to bring law makers to change how schools viewed integration of children with special needs. The case was to urge schools to ban segregation of black and white students. This urged families and advocates to spread the same message but urging schools to include students with disabilities. -
Title VI of Elementary and Secondary Education Act
the title’s purpose is to support programs that work with persons with disabilities. The Title VI helps programs start initiatives, funding, improvement, and expansion of services for persons with disabilities. -
Congressional Investigation
Investigation began looking into the treatment and quality of education of children with disabilities. The investigation was brought to Congress because of the large gap in quality among students with disabilities. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
(EHA) provides local and state support and protection of children with disabilities. Schools are funded to provide quality access to education for children with mental or physical disabilities. Under this act, schools are required to evaluate and plan for supports for the families and children of disabilities. -
Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System
Under the Florida department of education, FDLRS was established to provide services to young children with disabilities. In 1987, they added an area of service to include technology.

No Child Left Behind
Raise performance standards for all students including those with disabilities. The areas of focus were math and reading skills. This was in alignment with the Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act. -

Congress reauthorized the IDEA act in 2004 in alignment with No Child Left Behind. Some changes required schools to use research based interventions when supporting students with learning difficulties, or determining eligibility for special education. "Many schools have implemented Response to Intervention (RTI) as a method of meeting the new requirements set by IDEA 2004."
