  • Great Hurricane of Galveston

    Great Hurricane of Galveston
    On September 8, a Category 4 hurricane, bringing a 15-foot storm surge and winds of more than 135 mph. The hurricane ripped through Galveston, killing more than 6,000 and leaving 10,000 homeless. This storm was the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

    On December 17, the Wright brothers made history in their Kitty Hawk Flyer with the first powered flight. The first of four flights that day lasted just 12 seconds and traveled only 180 feet, but it proved that human flight was possible.

    In June 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Hitler declared a war of destruction on Germany’s ideological enemy, the communist regime. Einsatzgruppen were special killing units charged with the task of killing communist officials, partisans, and Jewish men between the ages of 15 and 60. The Einsatzgruppen frequently also killed old people, women, and children.

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    On December 7th, Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise attack by some 350 Japanese aircraft sunk or badly damaged eighteen US naval vessels, including eight battleships, destroyed or damaged 300 US aircraft, and killed 2,403 men. This unprovoked attack brought the United States into World War II, as it immediately declared war on Japan.

    Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was a landmark 1954 Supreme Court case in which the justices ruled unanimously that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional
    Students of all races were allowed to attend the same schools. San Antonio was among the first cities in the U.S. to comply with the order.

    On November 8th, George Herbert Walker Bush was elected as the 41st president of the United States. Born in Massachusetts in 1924, George H.W. Bush moved to Texas in the 1940s. In 1966, Bush was elected to Congress from Texas's 7th district in Harris County. From there he moved on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, & vice-president of the United States under Ronald Reagan.

Upon taking office, Bush signed a major tax cut program and education reform bill, the No Child Left Behind Act. He pushed for socially conservative efforts such as the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act and faith-based initiatives.
