    John leaves because of his selfish actions of stealing money from his family. He's too much of a coward to face his consequences. He tells his family he will be back in 1 year. "it's only a year, Alex will straighten things out and I'll be back" -John (page 10)
    He boards a steamer ship and makes his way to Canada. After arriving on the east coast, he takes a train and heads west. He was lured to the western prairies from the propaganda that was being advertised in the London emigration office.
  • War is declared

  • John joins the Blaine Lake RNWMP

  • John meets Jessie Patterson

    John gets TB
    John gets tuberculosis, he is not allowed to work. Jessie takes care of him everyday the best she can. She risked her own health to help him stay alive. "Many women Jessie's age would have had second thoughts" (page 33)
    this is a very important event because if it weren't for John getting TB, him and Jessie wouldn't have spent so much time together. which is what is brought them so much closer together. ultimately, Jessie caring for John while he was sick is what made him fall in love with her.
  • Polly decides she wants to go find John in Canada because of the lack of communication they have had in the last few months.

  • Bad luck is cursed onto the Hutchison family

    Bad luck is cursed onto the Hutchison family
    The first footing is a very important night, it determines whether or not good luck will be upon that family. And when Clyde Barrow messes up the first footing, bad luck is cursed on the Hutchison family. "Oops, sorry friends, I'll go out and come in again". - Clyde Barrow (page 39). From this night on, things progressively get worse for Polly's family.

    John and Polly are in Jessie's car when John decides to go to Blaine lake instead so Polly can talk to Jessie about her and John. There is a shovel and gun in the back. John says its for the geese. He gets out way off the road when it was dark out to shoot some geese. On his way back to the vehicle, he points the barrel of the gun to Polly's head. "No, Jack don't" - Polly (pg. 79). He tells himself it was an accident while he vomits from the blood. he then digs a hole and places her body inside.

    John burns the car to hide the evidence.
    In attempts of wiping out the evidence, John burns the car he shot Polly in. this is an important event because John does a poor job of keeping his story straight when he is being questioned. this could result in backlash for John further into the book. "Now that is funny, Isaak thought, he told me a different story than he did the other boys"- Isaak. (page. 83)
