    Washington DC Chosen as Nations Capital
    In July of 1790, President George Washington was given authority to select the nations new capital. Philadelphia was the existing capital, but something new and more central was needed. He chose a site that was the most central for the existing nation, and it was named in honor of him and Christopher Columbus: Washington D.C. (District of Columbia). (Political)
  • Eli Whitney Invents the Cotton Gin

    Eli Whitney Invents the Cotton Gin
    In 1794, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which was a machine that could be used to seperate cotton seeds from the fibers. This invention made it much faster and easier to process cotton. THis had a large social and political impact because the need for slave labor greatly increased becuse cotton was needed at a much faster rate than ever before. (Social)
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Whiskey Rebellion
    In August of 1794, the tax being imposed on whiskey and other items for farmers angered them. The farmers gathered together and began to rebel against the tax collectors. Eventually, a Federal Mashall was attacked and President Washington was forced to call in the malitia to get control of the rebellion. This response was important because it showed how strong the Federal Government had grown. (Political)

    Jay's Treaty
    Jay's Treaty was an agreement between existing United States and England, in which England agreed to stop tryint to settle land in the United States (specifically the NorthWest). Some trase agreements were also established to open up trade between the United States and the British, which was hugely profitable for the United States, (Political)
  • Louisianna Purchase

    Louisianna Purchase
    The Louisianna Purchase was a deal negotiated by President Jefferson, that allowe he United States to purchase a large area of land from France for a very low price. For $.05 per acre, the United Stated nearly doubled in physcal land area. Overall, the Louisianna Purchase cost the nation 15 million dollars, but provided vast areas of needed land and wealth.   • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Lewis and Clark Expedition
    Lewis and Clark set out on a very important journey in 1804. They were in search of a passage to the Pacific coast. All together the trip took more than two years, but with the help of Sacagawea, the group learned a lot of valuable information about the geography of the expanding nation, as well as how to best use its natural resources.   • Robert Fulton's Steamboat

    Robert Fulton's Steamboat
    Robert Fulton developed the first steamboat in the summer of 1807. His first jounry was from New York City to Albany, and although it was a short jounrney, it illustrated a huge advancement for the country. Short after, Fulton because taking passengers and goods down the Hudson River, which meant that people and goods were becoming more mobile and more able to settle new lands. (Social)
  • National Road Built to West Virginia

    National Road Built to West Virginia
    In the Spring of 1811, the National Road to West Virginia was completed and opened for travel. This road allowed people to travel directlyto and from the Allegheny Mountains. It was significant because it allowed the settlement of an area that was previously too difficult to access for more settlers. (Social)
  • Lowell Textile Mill

    Lowell Textile Mill
    In the Fall os 1813, Lowell opened up a large textile mill in Waltham, Massechusettes. Lowell created the Boston Manufacturing Company and began opening mills that provided much needed jobs. Unlike many of the existing jobs, these new opportunities were particularly attractive for women in the area. Women who worked in the mills were eventaully called "Mill Girls." Eventually, the town of Lowell, Massachusettes was built, and it gave a huge economic boost to a nation in need. (Social)
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    In 1820, both Maine and Missouri were admitted into the United States under what was called The Missouri Compromise. There was much debate about allowing either state because one was a free state and the other was still a slave state. The Missouri Compromise established that both states would be admitted to the Union, and the balance between free and slave states would be maintained. (Social)
