Without upcoming researchers knowing, there was a secure networks that were being used for the military. The work that the military was doing was so secretive, none of the professional researchers knew about their network.

Another major step was in 1965 when Roberts and Thomas Merrill created a speed dial-up telephone line, which was virtually the first network.
