Computers

The History of Technology

  • Period: to

    First Generation Computers

The first computer was made using vacuum tubes and magnetic drums. They were extremely big and very expensive as they used a lot of electricity. They could only solve one problem at a time unlike the computers we have today.
  • Period: to

    Second Generation Computers

The second generation of computers used transistors which made computers a lot faster, much cheaper to use, smaller and more reliable. Instructions could be given in words but it produced a lot of heat and could damage the computer.
  • Period: to

    Third Generation Computers

In the third generation of computers, transistor were made smaller and placed into chips inside the computer which increased the speed and efficiency of computers. Keyboards were created and monitors with operating systems allowed people to use many programs at once. These were smaller and cheaper than the computers before.
  • Period: to

    Forth Generation Computers

The microprocessor was made and put into a small chip. This contained the central processing unit and memory controls of the computer into one chip. In 1981 IBM created the first computer for people to use in their homes. These computers could link with networks which lead to a development of the internet.
  • Period: to

    Fifth Generation Computers

Today computers use artificial intelligence which allows computers to use voice recognition which saves us time from typing and touch screen technology instead of using a mouse. They are also much smaller and can be carried around conveniently in one's hands.
  • Smart ID Card

    Smart ID Card
The Smart ID Card is inserted into the card reader, then the resident will be requested to place their thumb on the finger print reader. Once this is done the E-Channel gate will open automatically. This confirms indentity of the person.
  • The Automated Passenger Clearence System (E-Channel)

E-Channel is a border control system which is introduced by the Hong Kong Immigration Department in 2004. It is designed to speed up cross border immigration processes for residents of Hong Kong, Macau and people who quite frequently visit Hong Kong. This is where we use the smart ID card.
  • Fingerprint Lock System

    Fingerprint Lock System
The Fingerprint Lock System is a high security system which only detects only finger prints. It is convenient in case of loss of keys or access cards.
