Britain’s Southern Policy in Sudan
The british saw Sudan as a chance to take over. They modernized the country and also split it into half, with Southern Sudan and Northern Sudan. Northern Sudan is where all the power and infrastructure is. Southern Sudan compared to Northern is not as civilized. Another part of change is that they must agree with Egyptian traditions. -
Anya Nya is Created
Anya Nya is a rebel group in Southern Sudan. It was in the first Sudanese Civil War. The Anya Nya rebel group had the Nuer, Lotuko, Madi, Bari, Acholi, Zande, Dinka and other groups included. This group ended when they signed an agreement with the Sudanese government in 1972. -
1st Civil War in Sudan
The First Sudanese Civil War started on the same day as when the Anya Nya rebel group started. They were rebeling about equality and religion. -
Sudan's Independece from Britain
Sudan gained it’s independence from the British on December 3rd of 1956. -
Oil First Discovered
Oil in Sudan was discovered in 1979 by a man named Abu Jabra #1. It was found on the west of Muglad. -
Second Sudanese Civil War
The second civil war was a continuation from the first one. The Northern government didn’t agree with the Southern government, about their religions and beliefs. Also, oil was a huge part of why they fought- both sides tried to claim that the oil was on their side, not the other’s. -

SPLM/A is a group of rebels that was formed during the Sudanese civil war- they were the ones who fought in it. -
Nimeiri Becomes President
Jaafar Nimeiri was made president of Sudan on the 16th of October in 1989. The president before him was Ismail al-Azhari. -
Omar Al-Bashir Becomes President
Omar Al-Bashir became the president of Sudan on the 1st of December in 1989, overthrowing ex-president Nimeiri. -
Major Famine in Sudan
The Sudanese was involved in a huge famine due to the unwillingness of the government. The Northern government refused and rejected any help from other agencies and the Sudanese had to suffer with hunger and pain, causing 70,000 people to die. -
Darfur Conflict Starts
The conflict started by two rebel groups in Darfur refusing to endure the unfairness that the Sudanese government has started such and protection. This started the Janjaweeds, or the Arab militias and the Sudanese to join forces and attack the villages of Darfur.
