UNIVAC stands for universal automatic computer. It operates on machine tape, and handles both numbers and letters very well, also it separates complex problems of input and output from the actual computation facility. -
1st Generation Computers
The UNIVAC and computers like it were 1st generation computers. 1st generation computers were the last to use the Vacuum tubes to store data. -
2nd generation computers
2nd generation computers were computers that used transistors. -
3rd generation computers
3rd generation computers enabled computers to become smaller and lighter. The Z1 is an example of 3rd generation computers. The computers in this early integrated circuit were all considered 3rd generation. -
4th generation computers
The microprocessor functions as the central processing unit (CPU), or brains of the computer. computers that use a microprocessor chip are called 4th generation computers. -

Jack Kilby invented the worlds 1st integrated circuit, a small chip compatible of containing thousands of transistors. It enabled computers to become smaller and lighter. -
Basic
The Basic program led to the creation if Microsoft. Thomas Kurtz and John Kemeny created the BASIC. BASIC stands for Beginners All-purpose symbolic instruction code. They wanted to enable students in fields other than science and math to use computers. Also the Basic had programmed languages for businesses to create financial, statistical and engineering programs. The Basic was much more easier to use than any other program. -

VisiCalc became an instant success. Finally ordinary home computer users could see the benefit of owning a personal comp. The main point of the VisiCalc was useful for making spread sheets. -

This program processed words, just the same as Word Perfect and Microsoft. Its the first word processing application. It really helped the personal computer users. -

A Mosaic is a description of smaller images, stones or glass or other material that make up a bigger image. The hope of the Mosaic was that people would have a better way toconduct research and communicate in a new way. -
