    Second Crusade
    -1144, Christians lose Edessa to Turkish army
    -Calls for new crusade
    -Led by King Louis VII and King Conrad III
    -Crusaders were defeated at Damascus
    -Humiliating defeat at Damascus ends Second Crusade

    Third Crusade

    Third Crusade
    -General Shirkuh seizes control of Cairo in 1169
    -Forces crusader army to leave
    -1187, Saladin (now leading Shirkuh's troops following his death) takes back Jerusalem
    -Inspired Third Crusade led by Emperor Federick Barbarossa and later King Philip II and King Richard I
    -Richard I and Saladin sign a peace treaty which ends the Third Crusade -Treaty does not give jerusalem to the Christians

    Fourth Crusade

    Fourth Crusade
    -Crusaders focus on taking out the Byzantine emperor Alexius III
    -New Byzantine Emperor Alexius IV is stranggled and dies in 1204
    -Crusades declare war on Constantinople
    -Ended with the conquest of the Byzantine capital

    Fifth Crusade
    -Led by King Andrew II of Hungary, Duke Leopold VI, and John of Brienne
    -Called by Pope Innocent III
    -Attacked Egypt by land and sea but were defeated in 1221

    Sixth Crusade

    Sixth Crusade
    -Led by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II
    -1229, Emperor Frederick II achieved the peaceful transfer of Jerusalem to Crusader control through negotiation with Al-Kamil
  • Jan 1, 1248

    Seventh Crusade

    Seventh Crusade
    -Led by Thibault IV of Champagne
    -Sought to regain control of Jerusalem
    -Temporarily regained control of Jerusalem
    -However lost the city shortly later in 1244 to Khwarazmian forces

    Eighth Crusade

    Eighth Crusade
    -Led by Louis IX
    -1270, attcked Egypt (again) and lost (again) in the defeat at Mansura
