  • October Revolution

    October Revolution
    The "October Revolution" overthrows Abbud and an Islamist-led government is established. It establised a constitutional government and it cancelled any laws that restrict freedom.
  • Sudanese Communist Party

    Sudanese Communist Party
    The Communist Party leaders were excuted after a short-lived coup against Numeiri. Numeiri was a socialist and pursued Pan-Arabist polocies.
  • Civil War

    Civil War
    Civil war breaks out again in the south involving government forces and the Sudan People's Liberatio Movement (SBLN). This movement was led by John Garang.
  • Missile Attack

    Missile Attack
    US launches missile attack on a pharmaceutical plant in Khartoum, alleging that it was making materials for chemical weapons. America destroyed Osama bin Laden's 'chemical weapons' factory in Sudan.
  • Dissolved National Assembly

    Dissolved National Assembly
    President Bashir dissolves the National Assembly and declares a state of emergency following a power struggle with parlimentary speaker, Hassan al-Turabi. Al-Bashir ruled for another year under emergency decree, before further sham elections in 2000 saw him annointed president once more.
  • Darfur Conflict

    Darfur Conflict
    Khartoum government and the main rebel faction in Darfur, the Sudan Liberation Movement, sign a peace accord. Two smaller rebel groups reject the deal and the fighting continues.
  • Uprising

    Army moves to quell rebel uprising in western region of Darfur; hundreds of thousands of refugees flee to neighbouring Chad. The intensity of the conflict in Sudan's western region has gone down since its early years, but most of Darfur is still extremely dangerous.

    Systematic Killings of non-Arab villagers
    UN official says pro-government Arab Janjaweed militias are carrying out systematic killings of non-Arab villagers in Darfur.
    Army officers and opposition politicians, including Islamist leader Hassan al-Turabi, are detained over an alleged coup plot.

    Darfur Conflict continued
    African Union extends the mandate of its peacekeeping force in Darfur for six months. Hundreds are thought to have died in the heaviest fighting between northern Sudanese forces and their former southern rebel enemies since they signed a peace deal last year. Fighting is centred on the southern town of Malakal.
