Salva is 11 years old.
Salva goes to school, while he out school he hears a CRACK.
A war broke up in his village and it takes 30 min to get back home. -

Salva's village Loun-Ariik is under attack and Salva can't find his family. Salva sees people from his village near him so they go sleep in a barn, the next morning when Salva woke up no one was there. -

Salva made new friends named Marial. Marial wants Salva to travel to Ethopia with him. -

Salva thinks his friend got eaten by a lion. Salva and his uncle are traveling across the river to Ethiopia. -

Salva hit his toe on a hard rock and his toenail came off. Everyone is so thirsty and there is not enough water. -

Salva sees people that have symbols on their body, the symbols are Dinka symbols and thats the tribe that Salva is from. Salva thinks that his parents might be on their way. -

Salva found a group of people from the Dinka tribe and they gave him food and water. He stayed with them. -

Salva finds his uncle Jewiir who's been in the army the past two years. His uncle got food for Salva but then Salva kept vomiting. -

Slava and his uncle went across the Nile and found a fishing town. -

Salva shows perseverance because even though he has lost most of his family and still has no one he is still trying to survive and not letting that get to him that much. -

Salva realizes that his family died. -

The difficult challenge that Salva has to face is not getting shot by the soldiers and not get eaten by the crocodiles. He also needs to have perseverance because it takes their group and year and a half to reach Kenya. He goes from Southern Sudan, to Ethiopia, to Kenya. -

Salva is getting forced to go back to Southern Sudan and has to cross the Gilo River. Crocodiles. -

Salva becomes a patient person waiting and not losing hope when his name wasn't on the list to America the first few times. When he was finally picked he felt so happy. Salva also became very independent and learns how to take care of himself. -

Slava shows perseverance in this chapter because even though he was scared to leave his village he still left to create a new life and world that would be better for him. Salva doesn't speak English but still works with the English that he knows. -

Salva is adapting to America good. He still didn't fully understand English but he was doing his best. Slava faces conflict when he receives an email saying that his dad is alive. He goes through challenges when he's trying to go to Southern Sudan to go to see his father. -

Salva gets to Southern Sudan and sees his dad. Salva wants to see his mom too but Salva's dad tells him that it's too dangerous because there is still war going on. -
Southern Sudan, Nya: Chapter 1
Nya is 11 years old.
Nya has to walk down a path and she struggles with thorns, hot temperature and has to carry a heavy bucket.
This task takes almost all morning. -

While Nya is on here walk along the path she is not wearing shoes so thorns and other things get into her feet and it hurts her. -

Nya has to dig a hole in the dry lake to get water. -

Nya's father and brother had to go off to hunt. Nya and her mother were afraid that the men in their family would run into the tribesmen somewhere, and they would get injured or worse. -

Nya´s sister is sick. She got sick from drinking dirty water. -

Nyaś family took Akeer to the doctor. The doctor said that Akeer needs to drink clean water from now on or she will get sick again. The only way to do that is to boil the dirty water. -

Nya and her family have to move to a different area because there is a scarce amount of water where they are. Men came to talk to the older kids to talk about water. -

Nya scooped up brown muddy water and started drinking it to cool off. Nya then scooped more water up to fill the whole bucket and then she started walking back home while her foot still hurt. Going back will take longer then coming had. -

Nya has to take her second trip to the pond. This was Nya's daily routine seven months of the year. -

There are men that come to Nya's village and they are planning to do something in Nya's village and Nya can't figure out what they are plotting. -

Nya finds it hard to believe the men because there has never been water that close before. -

The workers found water but Nya was disappointed when she saw that the water had mud in it. -
Southern Sudan, Nya: Chapter 15
Nya was becoming inpatient because the water is muddy and they have to do several things before the water and become drinkable. Nya still has to take walks to the pond to get water. -
Southern Sudan, Nya: Chapter 16
Nya see's her dad clearing land. Nya runs over and ask her dad what's happening. Her dad tells her that they are building something. -
Southern Sudan, Nya: Chapter 17
Nya's father is building a school were girls and boys can go. -
Southern Sudan, Nya: Chapter 18
Nya's village gets clean water! Everyone is celebrating. Nya wants to thank the guy that did all this. The guy that did all this for them is Slava!! -

Nya means a crane when she says " iron giraffe." Because she doesn't know what those are she she describes it as and animal. -

The workers are drilling holes and the holes sprang a leak and then they patched it and the patch sprang a leak. The workers have a boss. The boss would encourage the workers and laugh and joke with them.If that didn't work he would talk to them earnestly and try to persuade them and if that didn't work he would get angry.
