Nimeiri become president in North Sudan
G.M. Nimeiri wins the election on May 9, 1969 in North Sudan and made the official name from Democratic Republic of Sudan to Sudanese Socialist Union. Nimeiri won 4 elections: 1969, 1971, 1977, and 1983. In 1985 he was replaced. (ppt) -
Oil is first discovered in Sudan.

The Sudanese Civil War started in April 1983. It was like the continuing of the 1st Civil war. It started in South Sudan because of how the North treated the South unfairly and it spread to other places. It ended in January 2005. The war took 22 years.
