    National Parent Organizations
    These organizations consisted of parents who had children with disabilities. These organizations helped parents relate to one another and gave them people they could confide in with the problems they were facing. These organizations also help facilitate information involving programs and resources. Structure was also provided to help aid these children with different services.

    Deinstitutionalization Movement

    Before, it was a common practice to institutionalize people with disabilities. However, during this time, efforts were made to bring these people closer to the community rather than institutionalizing them. This geared away from isolating them and gave opportunity for parents to raise their children with disabilities.

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This law ensures that all children, regardless of a disability, have access to free public education.
  • Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson V. Rowley

    Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson V. Rowley
    This case involved a child who was deaf named Amy Rowley. Her parents contented that Amy would learn better at school if she had an interpreter. However, the school had a designed an individualized program where Amy was succeeding. They felt they met the requirement of providing an appropriate education. The Court’s decision was that appropriate education for a deaf child with a disability does not necessarily mean education that will produce the maximum possible achievement.

    The 'Education for All Handicapped Children Act' was amended to the 'Individuals with disabilities Education Act'.

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    This law ensures the right of individuals with disabilities to nondiscriminatory treatment. This includes in employment, transportation, public accommodations, state and local government, and telecommunications.

  • Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District (2017)

    Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District (2017)
    This case involves student Endrew F. The Douglas County School District used the Rowley language to argue that Endrew F. benefitted from the IEP that met the law. The Court’s decision was that appropriate education for a deaf child with a disability does not necessarily mean education that will produce the maximum possible achievement.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The 'No Child Left Behind Act' attempted to improve the academic performance of all students, including those with disabilities. Under the NCLB, students with disabilities are to take standardized test of academic achievement and achieve the same level as students without disabilities. Teachers were expected to be "highly qualified". This was noted as unreasonable nor achievable.
