National Home for Union Veterans
A home was designed in response to the returning Civil War veterans that were injured during the way. Although, I am sure conditions of these homes were not great, I think it is important because it marks a time when the Government acknowledged disabled individuals. Even if it was in an ableism kind of way. -
Moral Menace
Attempts were made to lock up people with disabilities becuase they were believed to be a "moral menace". Goddard was the director at "Vineland Training School for Freeleminded Girls and Boys". This movements locked up "idoits" and "imbeciles" therefore eliminating "defectives" from reproducing. -
Binet IQ test
Dr. Alfred Binet created an IQ test that identifid "slow" or "retarded" children. The test was modified by Lewis Terman-Standford Univeristy. Unfortuntely, these tests were used to discriminate people. -
Polo Research
Many disabilities during this time were due to the polo disease. Many people were killed or severally injured before a cure was created for the polo disease. -
President Kennedy
President Kennedy recognized mental retardation as an issue of national significance because his sister Rosemary was born with a disorder. -

President George Bush passed the No Child Left Behind Act to ensure all students achieve.
