First attempt at Special Training
In the early 1600's the first known attempt was made at special training for deaf children and adults by teaching sign language.

Sensory and Motor Development School
Edouard Sequin started a school in 1847 in Paris for students with sensory and motor development disablilites. His class had 30 students.

Rehabilitation Act
The Rehabilitation Act allowed the 1973 ammendment to be created. This act was originally created for wounded soldiers and injured workers to get employment. Then later people with special needs not to be discriminated against.

Parents Get Involved
After WWII parents got involved and created organizations to support their children with disabilities this includes the United Cerebral Palsy Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and John F. Kennedy’s Panel on Mental Retardation.

Brown vs. Board of Education
Although this was a segregation case it was the catalyst for other cases including the inclusion of children with disablities into the public school system.

Education for Teachers
By 1968, the Federal government had supported:
Training for more than 30,000 special education teachers and related specialists;

Mills vs. Board of Education
This was important because children that denied access to public school systems that had no where else to go won this case. This case was for seven children.

Willowbrook and Geraldo
Geraldo Rivera broadcasted to the world the horrific sights of this "school" which led to the awakening of America's conscience towards helping its citizens with disablities.
