  • American School for the Deaf

    The American School for the Deaf was the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It was founded and built in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Beattie v. Board of Education

    Beattie v. Board of Education is where students with disabilities were expelled from school because they disturbed the teacher and other students. They made them nauseated by their looks and drooling.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    Council for Exceptional Children was the first group that was created to advocate for children with disabilities.
  • The Bradley Home

    The Bradley Home was the first children's psychiatric hospital that was built in East Providence, Rhode Island.
  • Classification of Autism

    The Classification of Autism was introduced by Dr. Leo Lanner. Dr. Leo Lanner was from John Hopkins University. Autism is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder.
  • Elementary & Secondary Education Act

    The Elementary & Secondary Education Act did not make it a law for schools to educate students with disabilities. It gave them funding to allow them to teach students with disabilities.
  • Section 504

    Section 504 is considered the first law that gives students with disabilities protection. Students that qualify for a 504 will have a physical or mental disability that prevents them from being able to learn like their peers.
  • Least Restrictive Environment

    Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is put into place so that the student spends time throughout their day in as many general education classrooms as possible. This is to help them get socialization with their peers.
  • IDEA

    IDEA is an educational act that was also signed by President George W. Bush. It contained 6 pillars: FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education), LRE (Least Restrictive Environment), IEP (Individualized Education Plan), Evaluation, Parent/Student Participation, and Procedural Safeguard.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    The No Child Left Behind Act was put into place during President George W. Bush's presidency. This law wants all students to be proficient in reading and math by the year 2014.
