    This case overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson case and encouraged the formation of many advocacy groups to inform the public of need of special education programs.

    This act gave grants to state schools and institutions with programs that educate students with disabilities.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    The case resulted in which Pennsylvania agreed to provide free public education to children with mental retardation.

    Allows protection from discrimination of special needs and disabilities.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Ensures all students with disabilities are educated in public schools by providing free educations, special education for children 3-21, supplemental services, due process, zero reject, and least restrictive environment.
  • Least Restrictive Environment

    A student’s IEP environment must be in as many regular education classes as possible.
  • Individualized Education Program

    The Individualized Education Program plans special education instruction, supports, and services kids need to make progress and thrive in school.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    Those with special needs to have the same rights as everyone and cannot be discriminated against in schools, the workplace, and everyday society.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    This law gives rights and protections to kids with disabilities and covers them from birth through high school graduation or until they reach age 21.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    The goal of the No Child Left Behind Act was to provide more education opportunities for students. Focusing on students in poverty, of color, receiving special education services, and who speak and understand limited or no English at all.

    Revisions were done to the original IDEA regarding the IEP, due process, student discipline, etc.
